HAVELOCK - It took the Havelock football team about half a quarter to find some rhythm, but it was all systems go from then on.
The Rams ran past their 'backyard' rival West Carteret, 63-10, to start the Coastal 3A Conference portion of the season.
Rams' head coach Caleb King raved about how proud he was of all the players had overcome leading up to the game Friday night.
"For us to be able to score 63 points after not having played football in over a month and having had just four practices, you gotta be happy about that," King said. "It took us a little bit like you'd expect not playing in that long but the guys really settled in and played well from then on."
The Rams have four transfers that played on the other side of the rivalry a year ago, two of which played Friday night.
Defensive lineman Tyree Lewis scored a rushing touchdown for the Rams and defensive back Christian Frazier thought he had a receiving touchdown but the officials deemed he was out of bounds.
"Yeah we wanted to get those guys in the end zone against their old school," King said.
Rams' star quarterback Anthony Harris threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, amassing 228 total yards.
Welton Spottsville caught two of those passes from Harris and running back Kamarro Edmonds ran for 127 on the night and had two scores.
"It's been amazing all these kids have been through, some of them living in temporary homes after the hurricane and just to still be at practice and be able to play well in the games, it's been incredible," King said. "It teaches them about adversity that they'll face in life and they are tough kids."
Ever since Havelock began its dynastic decade in 2010, the Rams have broken up the season into sections, seeking a championship in each one - county, conference, state.
King said it's about that middle one every week from now until the regular season concludes.
"Just trying to be 1-0 every single week," he said. "Being conference champions is always a big deal for us."
The Rams will take on White Oak next week.
