Bruce Carter, a Havelock native and linebacker with the NFL’s New York Jets, is hosting a free youth football camp on Saturday, July 16 at the Havelock Recreation Center.
The camp will run from 9 a.m. to noon, with open registration beginning at 8 a.m. Kids can also register at usafootball.com/fun.
According to its web site, USA Football FUNdamentals introduces children to football by teaching basic skills in a fun and energetic environment. Certified clinicians use a series of drills to show passing, catching and running skills in a non-contact setting.
All skills and drills selected are based on USA Football's Player Progression Development Model, ensuring children are learning in an age-appropriate manner and creating an ideal atmosphere for fun.
This is Carter’s second summer conducting his football camp.
Carter, a second-round draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 2011, is preparing for his sixth season in the National Football League.
He recorded 30 tackles, two sacks and two pass deflections last season as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Carter was released by the Buccaneers and signed with the New York Jets this offseason.
In five seasons, Carter has 207 tackles, five sacks and five interceptions in 289 games.
Carter starts training camp with the Jets on July 30.
