On Oct. 8, 1918, U.S. Army Cpl. Alvin C. York led an attack that killed 25 German soldiers and resulted in the capture of 132 others in the Argonne Forest in France. He was awarded the Medal of Honor. York died in 1964 at the age of 76. (Gary Cooper’s portrayal of York in the 1941 film “Sergeant York” landed him the Academy Award for Best actor.)
