Joseph Van Mason, 83, of Havelock, died Saturday, July 23, 2016, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House, Newport.

Joseph Van Mason, 83, of Havelock, died Saturday, July 23, 2016, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House, Newport.

Born in Columbia, he served in the Army and later graduated from East Carolina Teachers College. He taught social studies in Virginia and North Carolina, including at Havelock High School. After teaching, he was a civil service employee at the Naval Air Rework Facility at Cherry Point. He was a member of Newport Masonic Lodge No. 706, the Carteret County Shrine Club and Atlantic United Methodist Church.

Memorial service with Masonic Rites will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Atlantic United Methodist Church with the Revs. George Gouge and Paul Harris officiating.

He is survived by his step¬children, Donna Peel of Bay St. Louis, Miss., Kenny Bell of Williamsburg, Va., Cheryl Bell of Kitty Hawk and Pamela Cunningham of Hampton, Va.; and four step-¬grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, c/o Sudan Shriners, 403 E. Front Street, New Bern, NC 28560.
