The death of an 18-year-old is being investigated after he was hit by a car in Newport.

Antoine Marcel Godette Jr., 18, of Bogue Loop Road in Newport was hit in the westbound lane of N.C. 24 near Marietta Lane around 3:40 a.m. Wednesday, according to a press release from the Carteret County Sheriff's Office.

The driver, a man in his 40s or 50s driving a full-size pick-up truck who lives in Greensboro, called 911, according to CCSO Maj. Jason Wank. Other witnesses stopped to help and also called 911, Wank added.

The N.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the incident and Wank said any charges will be determined by their agency in conjunction with the district attorney's office. The Daily News was unable to reach Highway Patrol by deadline.

Godette, a Havelock High School senior, left his job at Wendy's in Morehead City around midnight to begin walking home, according to the release. Godette was wearing all-dark clothing and was reportedly already lying in the roadway when he was hit.

Broad & Gales Creek Fire and Rescue responded to the call, but Godette died at the scene, according to the release. An autopsy was performed at Onslow Memorial Hospital Wednesday morning.

The sheriff's office is asking for anyone traveling on N.C. 24 between midnight and 3:40 a.m. who may have seen Godette, or anyone who has information about the incident, to contact Detective Josh Phillips or Lt. Derek Moore with the Carteret County Sheriff's Office at 252-728-8400.
