Stadium hits pledge snag

HIGH POINT — A $5 million pledge from the High Point Convention and Visitors Bureau for the city’s downtown stadium has become mired in controversy. The CVB and the High Point City Council have been unable to agree on the wording of a proposed economic development agreement that would formalize the $250,000 annual commitment from the CVB to help the city pay off its construction debt on the project over 20 years. The CVB wants language in the 20-year agreement that protects its funding source — the proceeds of a 3 percent hotel tax in Guilford County that are distributed by the city to the CVB each year. However, the city’s version of the pact would not offer this guarantee.
