1. Blood drives: The Cape Fear Valley Blood Donor Center has several blood drives scheduled this week. Donors also may go by the center, at 3357 Village Drive, Suite 150, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to make a donation. It also is open the third Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All blood types are needed, however, the center has an urgent need for type O donors. For more information, call 615-5433. Here are some of the upcoming blood drives:

Today: Astoria Apartments, 405 Grand Wailea Drive, Hope Mills, 4 to 7 p.m.

Thursday: Cape Fear Valley Health System-Patient Financial Services, 227 Fountainhead Lane, 8 to 10 a.m.; Highsmith Rainey Specialty Hospital, 150 Robeson St., 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

2. Mother’s Day carriage rides: The Cool Spring Downtown District will host horse-drawn carriage rides for Mother’s Day on Saturday from 1 to 8 p.m. Rides leave from 222 Hay St. and last about 20 minutes. Tickets for group rides are $15 per person or $10 for children age 10 and younger. Private rides for two are available for $60 and include a rose bouquet. Call 678-8899 for reservations. Rain date is Sunday.

3. Nurse candlelight walk: Cape Fear Valley Health will hold its Nurses Candlelight Walk in observance of National Nurses Week on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on the front lawn of Cape Fear Valley Medical Center off Owen Drive. In case of rain, the event will move to the front lobby. The public is invited to participate. Free parking will be provided in the Cape Fear Cancer Center parking lot.
