HAVELOCK — City manager Frank Bottorff said the city was stunned by the loss of Public Works Director Mark Sayger, who died unexpectedly on Friday.
Sayger, 58, a retired Navy Civil Engineering Civil Corps engineer and diver, began his tenure with Havelock on Feb. 29, 2016. As public works director, he oversaw operations that encompassed city streets, water treatment and waste treatment, among other things.
“Havelock has a lot of challenges, especially with infrastructure,” Bottorff said. “We brought him in because of his experience and expertise.”
He described Sayger as a man of integrity, who was “a joy” to work with. “He was with the city less than two years,” he said, “but as a manager we spent a lot of time together. When you think of Mark, you think of honesty, integrity and dedication. We were lucky to have him.”
His wife, Susan Lee Haber, and four children survive Sayger.
Funeral services for Sayger were scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Open Door Baptist Church at 227 NC 24, Morehead City. Condolences can be made online through Munden Funeral Home at www.mundenfuneralhome.net.
