A Richlands man is dead and a Jacksonville man charged following a wreck on U.S. 17 Bypass this week, Highway Patrol officials announced Wednesday.

Darren Estes, 21, of Richlands, died when the box truck he was passenger in crashed into the back of a tractor trailer.

According to investigators, the collision occurred 2.7 miles south from U.S. 70 at 11:44 am.

A tractor trailer operated by Zemo Fissaha, 47, of Dallas, Texas, was traveling at a slow speed in the right southbound lane. Luis Ortez, 28, of Jacksonville, was operating a southbound box truck at approximately the posted speed limit in the left lane.

Ortez’s vehicle collided with the back of the semi, killing Estes.

Ortez was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and reckless driving.

The Estes family announced Wednesday that their son's funeral will be held at noon Saturday at Jones Funeral Home, Richlands. Survivors include his parents, Marcus Futrelle and Theresa Estes; brother, Thomas Estes, Jr.; sister, Kemberly Dadisman, according to obituary information submitted to The Jacksonville Daily News.
