Havelock puts game away in the second half for a 40-10 victory.
Havelock coach Jim Bob Bryant took one main thing away from his team’s 40-10 victory over Richlands on Friday night.
“We weren’t physical on either side of the ball,” he said. “We’re going to fix it all next week. We’re going to have full-gear practice every day. We will have live-contact drills every day in practice from here on out.”
Havelock rushed for six touchdowns, backing Zach Sabdo in his first start at quarterback, as the Rams beat Richlands 40-10 in a Coastal 3A Conference game Friday at Havelock High.
The Rams were coming off their bye week, and Richlands was Havelock’s homecoming game, but Bryant would hear nothing of possible factors as to his team’s play against the Wildcats.
“There ain’t no excuses,” he said. “Homecoming ain’t no excuse, and the bye week ain’t no excuse. They didn’t play physical because they had better things to do. You better believe we’ll play physical next week.”
Trey Owens, Cam Hutchinson and Solomon Beligotti had two rushing touchdowns each for Havelock (9-0, 4-0).
Richlands (1-8, 0-4) stayed in the game until about midway through the third quarter. Roman Eddleman had a 35-yard field goal and Ben Jackson’s 27-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Cayson drew the Wildcats within 21-10 with 4:17 left in the third period.
“I think they played a whole lot better tonight than they have the last couple of weeks,” Richlands coach Justin Snider said. “I think they feel like they’ve got nothing to lose when they line up against a team as good as Havelock is.
“I felt like the kids played well and played hard. There just comes a point that our lack of numbers and their ability to two-platoon kind of gets the best of you.”
That seemed to happen on Havelock’s very next drive. Owens scored on a 28-yard touchdown run just 1:15 after Richlands had scored, Beligotti’s 26-yard score and Hutchinson’s 4-yarder in the fourth quarter put the game away for the Rams.
Sabdo was efficient in the passing game and didn’t turn the ball over, making his first varsity start for the injured Corey Cooper at quarterback. His long pass to Jeffery Harris set the Rams up at the Richlands 1 yard line with 40 seconds left in the first half, setting up a Beligotti touchdown that gave Havelock a 21-3 lead at halftime.
“He played really well,” Bryant said of his sophomore quarterback. “He didn’t have any turnovers. He threw the ball well. I thought he played a good game stepping in for his first varsity start.”
Owens scored on a 10-yarder to open the contest for Havelock, and after Khalil Barrett intercepted Jackson, Hutchinson found the end zone from 2 yards out as the Rams led 14-0 in the first quarter.
Tiaseer Cruz recovered a Havelock muffed punt return to set up Eddleman’s 35-yard field goal early in the second for Richlands’ only points of the first half.
Havelock is next scheduled to play Swansboro at 7 p.m. Friday at Swansboro.
