VMA-223 left on Monday

A group of Marines with Marine Attack Squadron 223 at Cherry Point left Monday for a deployment in support of operations against ISIS.

VMA-223, which flies the AV-8B Harrier, will serve in support of Special-Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Crisis Response-Central Command, according to a release from Cherry Point. The squadron will fly in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, which is the military name for operations against ISIS terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

The Marines will also participate in theatre security cooperation events in the region, according to the release.

The expected length of the deployment was not released.

VMA-223, which carries the nickname Bulldogs, is part of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing headquartered at Cherry Point. Its mission is provide offensive air support, air defense and armed reconnaissance for Marine forces.
