Event set for 6 p.m. at tourist center
The Havelock Chamber of Commerce and the Havelock News are teaming up for a Havelock Board of Commissioners candidates forum at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Havelock Tourist and Event Center.
Three city board seats are up for election, with incumbents Danny Walsh, Karen Lewis and Peter Van Vliet all running to hold their seats. Challengers include Clinton Jones, Michele Leo, and Ninad “Nick” Patel. All are expected to attend the forum that will feature randomly selected questions of which the candidates have no prior knowledge.
Though George Corbin is on the ballot for commissioner, he is not scheduled to appear at the forum and has said he does not want anyone voting for him in the election. Corbin was appointed to fill former commissioner Jim Stuart’s seat on the board after he had already filed to seek election. State law prohibited the removal of his name from the ballot.
Election Day is Nov. 3, and the final day to register to vote in the election is Friday.
However, same-day voter registration is available during the early-voting period that runs from Oct. 22 to 31. Early voting can be done only at the Craven County Board of Elections Office in New Bern.
