Craven County Schools announced early dismissal for students today.
High schools are scheduled to close at noon, elementary schools at 12:30 p.m. and middle schools at 1 p.m.
The school system cited potential flooding of roadways as the reason.
Craven Community College is also scheduled to close at noon today.
The area is under a flood watch. Havelock has recorded 11 consecutive days of rain. Overnight, 1.61 inches of rain fell in the Havelock area, according to the National Weather Service in Newport. Another half inch had fallen between 8 and 10 a.m.
Consistent moderate to sometimes heavy rain remains in the forecast throughout the afternoon. Rain is also expected Saturday and Sunday. The area is expected to start drying out on Monday, and sunny skies are in the forecast starting on Tuesday with high temperatures in the middle 70s, according to the weather service.
