Rams put Northside away early with 43-0 victory

After sweating out an intense, suspenseful one-point victory a week ago over Greenville Rose, the Havelock Rams stormed out of the gates Friday night against Northside.

Havelock scored 35 first-half points, and put the finishing touches on in its first drive of the second for a 43-0 win.

The Rams played the game with heavy hearts as defender Tyiyon Johnson’s father passed away on Friday.

Both Tony Sharpe rushing, and Quinzel Lockhart receiving from quarterback Corey Cooper, delivered three touchdowns for the Rams.

“I thought our O-line blocked really well and Corey Cooper had his best game for us at quarterback tonight,” Havelock coach Jim Bob Bryant said. “The defense shutting them out was huge and it’s big for us to be unbeaten through nonconference with our schedule because these kids have had to get up for their opponent every week to win the game.”

Those five wins for Havelock were against Washington, New Bern, New Hanover, J.H. Rose and now Northside.

Sharpe rushed for 133 yards on 19 carries and the three scores. He has 932 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns on the season.

Lockhart caught six passes for 69 yards and three touchdowns.

“Quinzel, athletically, is just as good as any receiver we have had here at Havelock,” Bryant said.

Bryant also praised Rams’ receiver Taquan Green, a former backup running back. Green caught three balls for 60 yards.

“Taquan had a great game,” Bryant said. “He’s a former JV tailback with great speed and his hands are continuously getting better.”

Northside never really threatened to score, but Monarchs’ coach Bob Eason was unhappy with his defense.

“We can’t play that way on defense at Northside. We didn’t have a single stop tonight,” he said. “Our offense did some things and their defense just stopped us from scoring.”

Northside quarterback Jake Erickson threw for 94 yards, but the team managed just 16 rushing yards against a Havelock defense that gave up 48 points last week in a 49-48 Rams win.

Havelock is scheduled to host West Carteret (0-5) to open the Coastal 3A Conference season next week.
