Event planned for Sunday at Piney Grove AME Zion Church

The N.C. Society, Sons of the American Revolution, has scheduled a genealogy workshop at 1 p.m. Sunday at Piney Grove A.M.E. Zion Church in Havelock.

The church is located at 1430 Temples Point Road off N.C. 101 outside Havelock.

The workshop is designed to give participants an opportunity to begin tracing their family history. Those attending will learn how to find documents and assemble documents that trace their family histories.

During the American Revolution, at least 14 men from the Harlowe communities of Craven and Carteret counties fought on the side of the Colonists against the British, and the goal is to find possible ancestors of those 14 men.

Last month, the Sons of the American Revolution inducted Harlowe native and current Greenville resident Ed Carter into the organization after he was able to trace his roots back to one of the original 14 men.

The workshop is open to the public.

For more information, call Carter at 714-4485, Natalie Taylor at 447-8741 or Guy Higgins at 327-7752.
