Marine officials describe incident as a "hard landing"

A helicopter crash at Camp Lejeune killed one service member and injured several others Tuesday night.

Officials described the crash as a “hard landing” in a release, and said the incident is under investigation.

The CH-53E Super Stallion went down around 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Stones Bay area at the base, according to officials at Camp Lejeune. One service member was pronounced dead at Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune, while six others were evaluated and are scheduled for release. Another was admitted, and three others were transferred to Onslow County Memorial Hospital in stable condition, according to officials. Another was being transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

The helicopter was part of Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464, part of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing that is headquartered at Cherry Point. The helicopter was based at New River.

The names of the service member killed and those injured have not been released, pending notification of relatives.
