The Havelock Rams have turned their softball season around in a short time and continued to do so Wednesday with an 8-3 victory over West Craven.

It was Senior Night for the Rams, who only have a pair of seniors in Laneisha Nolon and injured pitcher Taylor Forehand.

Megan Brogden pitched for Havelock and got the win, allowing just three runs on five hits. Brogden also delivered at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.

“We did what we needed to do and that’s what we’ve done really since Easter,” Havelock coach Anna Spear said. “Everything has kind of gotten started for us, and the girls are peaking and playing with confidence.”

Havelock has won five straight games after starting the Coastal 3A Conference season 3-4.

Spear said the season began to change in the Rams’ 7-5 win in eight innings over West Carteret back on April 24. That same night, the Rams lost their main pitcher in Forehand.

“Nobody came unglued when they could have,” Spear said. “We lost our veteran in the circle and we didn’t let it get to us. We tried to prepare some versatility just in case of injuries.”

West Craven was one night removed from a 5-2 Senior Night victory over Richlands.

“Maybe we had a bit of a hangover from that game because it was an emotional victory for us, but we shouldn’t have,” West Craven coach Ashley Brown said. “They know that it’s always competitive when we come down here to Havelock.”

The decision in this game creates a logjam for second place in the conference.

West Craven, Havelock and Richlands all are done with their seasons and all three sit at 8-4 in the league.

Spear and Brown both said they had no idea how the league shakes out as far as making the playoffs and seeding for the playoffs. All three of the teams split with each other in head-to-head games.

West Craven (12-7, 8-4) and Havelock (8-12, 8-4) also split with conference leader Swansboro. Richlands beat the Pirates as well, but their win was in a tournament, not the regular season.

Playoff brackets are set to be released on Saturday.
