Jordan Begley has been through a little bit of a tough stretch recently.

The senior forward broke out of it with 19 points and five rebounds as the Havelock Rams held on for a 60-48 victory over White Oak in a Coastal 3A Conference boys basketball game on Wednesday in Havelock.

“I just tried to play my role out there and do the little things,” Begley said. “In my good games, I usually score 15 points or so. I just got out of a slump, so it feels good to be putting up points again.”

Begley scored 14 in the first half and helped the Rams get off to a fast start. Most of his points were from inside the paint, yet he still hit a 3-pointer and a mid-range jumper. His rebound and finish put Havelock on top 22-11 at the end of the first quarter.

The Rams built a 37-21 lead at halftime and opened the fourth quarter on a 14-0 run, building the advantage to 25 points.

“We finally got the tone going from the get-go. (White Oak) is very good and very well-coached,” Havelock coach Daniel Griffee said. “We forced turnovers and when we didn’t force turnovers, we made it hard for them to get it across halfcourt.”

Junior Kyran Bowman scored a game-high 29 points for Havelock. The guard contributed seven rebounds, three steals, three assists, four blocks and two slam dunks.

“When they face-guard Kyran, we have another guy who can step in and score. That takes the pressure off Kyran,” Griffee said.

Only five Havelock players scored. Khalil Barrett added seven.

The Rams outrebounded White Oak 29-23 and forced 16 turnovers.

“I take a lot of pride in my defense and I feel like we did good as a team,” Begley said. “Everybody did their job.”

Havelock (9-7, 8-0 Coastal 3A) remains in the lead in the conference. The Rams are next scheduled to host West Carteret on Tuesday.

“I feel like we are in good position but we are not content yet,” Griffee said. “We are going to be practicing hard and going to be prepared.”
