BAYBORO - The Pamlico Hurricanes had seemingly come alive with the warm weather Tuesday in a home game against Havelock.
Pamlico scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning on three hits off Havelock sophomore lefty Drew Simcox to claim an early lead.
From then on, Simcox and the Rams settled down and shut down the Canes’ offense. Trailing Pamlico 3-1 in the top of the fourth, Havelock plated four runs on one hit and three Hurricane errors to take a lead they would not relinquish on the way to a 6-3 victory.
“I’m really proud of the guys for not quitting after we executed poorly in the first inning,” Havelock coach Matt James said. “I didn’t really say anything to them. They started playing hard and smart and turned it around.”
The beginning of the turnaround came in that first with Pamlico having runners at second and third, one out, and three runs already home.
Simcox faked a throw to second base, confusing runners Trent Prescott and Tristan Nethercutt. Nethercutt headed toward third, forcing Prescott to run home, and he was tagged out.
“I thought the fake-pick caught (Pamlico) off guard there when they had scored three runs,” James said.
Pamlico’s Brad Bennett pitched opposite Simcox and was solid in his first outing since joining the team upon the conclusion of the basketball season. He tossed six innings, gave up five runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out nine.
“Brad was great. He’s an unknown arm for us because he had two quality guys in front of him last year and he mostly played shortstop for us,” Pamlico coach Mike Twichell Jr. said. “We just have to do a lot better job on defense behind him.”
The Hurricanes committed five errors for the game, had three passed balls and had four runners picked off the base paths.
“I think (Simcox) had an above-average pickoff move, but I also think we had below-average focus on the bases,” Twichell said. “They made the routine plays down the stretch and we didn’t.”
Simcox pitched five innings with three runs (one earned) on five hits to pick up the win.
Josh Little finished the final two innings for the save and was 2-for-4 at the plate for the Rams.
Havelock improves to 2-2 on the season with the win, while Pamlico drops to 0-3.
