A rainy night and White Oak stopped the Havelock High football team Friday night – but just for a quarter.

Derrell Scott eclipsed 5,000 rushing yards in his career, and the Ram defense posted its third straight shutout as Havelock defeated White Oak 54-0 in a Coastal 3A Conference game in Jacksonville.

As the rain came down for all of the first quarter, White Oak played its best of the night. The Viking defense forced the explosive Havelock offense to punt twice in its first two possessions, and White Oak’s option-offense also moved the ball well early.

Early in the second quarter of a scoreless game, White Oak drove inside the Havelock 10-yard line and appeared ready to take the lead as junior quarterback Elijah Harris converted a third-down pass to senior back Kendall White for 22 yards before Harris then picked up another first down on an 11-yard run as the first quarter closed.

“I thought we were focused,” White Oak coach Chad Ashley said.

Havelock coach Jim Bryant sure was impressed.

“They fought us tooth and nail,” he said. “You have to commend White Oak and their whole coaching staff.”

But Havelock’s defense stuffed White Oak on four consecutive plays, and the Vikings never got any closer.

Derrell Scott broke loose on a 78-yard run, setting up Travis Sabdo’s screen pass to Matthew Boykin that went for 13 yards and a touchdown.

Keion Joyner recovered a White Oak fumble that set up Scott’s 12-yard touchdown run, giving the Rams a 14-0 lead.

White took a sweep 80 yards into the end zone for the Vikings, but a penalty negated the score.

“It’s like going from a high point, to a low-point, suddenly,” Ashley said.

In the closing seconds of the first half, Sabdo found Michael Bowman on a 15-yard touchdown pass for a 21-0 Havelock lead at halftime.

After putting up three scores in the second quarter, the Rams would go on to score four more touchdowns in the second half. The first was a 65-yard run by Scott, who rushed for 222 yards on 15 carries and went over 5,000 rushing yards in his career.

“He’s an incredible back and an incredible young man,” Bryant said. “He’s a durable back. Derrell’s never missed a game, beginning from his freshman year. And he’ll give all the glory to God and his teammates.”

Scott did so.

“I give all the credit to God, my teammates, and coaches, for putting me in the position to succeed,” he said.

Sabdo threw 60 yards to Bowman for another score, and Boykin returned a punt 78 yards for a touchdown right before then end of the third quarter, lifting the Rams to a 41-0 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Taylor Woods had a 1-yard touchdown run and Cory Cooper added a 7-yarder for the final margin.

“It’s another team win, offense, defense and special teams,” Bryant said.

With the victory, the top-ranked Rams improved to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the Coastal 3A Conference heading into next week’s game at West Carteret.

White Oak, now 3-5 overall and 0-3 in the Coastal Conference, will look to improve next week at Richlands.

“We’re going to go into the game the same way we always do,” Ashley said. “We’ll look to get better and play hard on Friday night.”
