Millea places second in state tourney
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Havelock High School wrestler Charlie Millea finished second in the state at the 3A state wrestling championships held over the weekend at Lawrence-Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem.
Millea, a junior, was the top finisher for the Rams, who qualified six wrestlers for the championship.
Millea won his first two matches Friday and his first on Saturday to reach the championship match in the heavyweight division Saturday night. There, he ran up against Micah Stanfield from Eden Morehead High School, one of the top teams in the state.
Millea lost to Stanfield 11-3 in the finals to place second, receiving a silver medal.
Millea improved upon his finish last year, when he placed fifth in the state.
Havelock qualified six wrestlers for the state tournament. Freshman Christian Holleman finished seventh in the 119-pound division, while Comaldy Becton placed seventh in the 125-pound division.
David Stone (130), Ray Davis (135) and Dave Wilkins (189) all won matches at the state tournament and ended up ninth in their respective weight classes.
In the team competition, Winston-Salem Parkland won the tournament title, with Eden Morehead placing second. Havelock finished in a tie for 13th with Trinity High School. In all, wrestlers representing 74 3A high schools in the state participated in the tournament.
