In 2011, quarterback Garrett Crowe led Havelock to the state title, with his father, Chris, as an assistant coach.

This year, quarterback Travis Sabdo won a state title with his father, Bob, serving as an assistant coach.

“My dad gave me a lot of support throughout the whole game,” Travis Sabdo said. “It’s great.”

Havelock trailed Concord 10-0 early in the second quarter, the largest deficit the Rams endured all season. Havelock scored 21 straight points over the second and third quarters to get the victory.

In last season’s state championship game against Concord, Havelock also trailed, 21-14 at one point and 21-20 at halftime, before running away with a 55-21 victory.

The last time Havelock trailed by more than one possession in a game was in the second contest of the 2012 season when New Bern held a 34-13 lead in the third quarter. Havelock rallied but lost the game 34-33.
