Havelock senior running back Derrell Scott was not done collecting honors when he received the Most Valuable Player award in the state 3A title game. Scott was voted to the N.C. high school Associated Press All-State Team last week.

Scott joined Charlotte Catholic senior Elijah Hood, Concord junior Rocky Reid and Garner junior Nyheim Hines as running backs on the list.

Hood, who has committed to play at North Carolina, received 12 votes, while Scott, Reid and Hines all got four nods apiece.

“It feels great and it is an honor that I am really thankful for because there are a lot of great running backs in the state of North Carolina,” Scott said.

Havelock coach Jim Bob Bryant said Scott’s selection to the team was definitely no surprise.

“Not a surprise at all,” said Bryant, who was voted the state’s Coach of the Year. “It is a great culmination for a great career for Derrell to be picked by the sports writers to the AP All-State Team.”

Scott ran for 2,147 yards and 25 touchdowns on the season, averaging 9.4 yards per carry. He set a state 3A championship game record with a 96-yard touchdown run on the way to a 209-yard, three-touchdown performance in Havelock’s 21-13 victory over Concord, earning MVP honors.
