Scott, Boykin lead Rams to another shutout victory

“If you check back on our tapes, Derrell gets the first carry in pretty much all of our games,” Bryant said. “It’s great that he scored a touchdown on his first touch on his birthday, but that was not necessarily in the game plan. Our game plan is to get Derrell the ball as much as we can get it to him. It usually works pretty good.”

Boykin would score next. On fourth-and-7 from the Patriot 33, the junior caught a screen pass from Travis Sabdo, broke out of a tackle, and then headed up the field for a touchdown.

“The dude had me,” Boykin said of the Patriot defender. “I was just trying to make a move off him. I felt he didn’t have me good enough, so I just went off of him, and then touchdown.”

Boykin then took a jet sweep 81 yards for a touchdown, giving Havelock a 20-0 lead with 7:56 left in the first half.

“I saw the opening and I just took it and used the speed I had,” said Boykin, who had 92 yards rushing and 82 receiving. “I just saw that crease to the outside.”

Havelock put the game out of reach in the final 2:20 of the first half. First, Taylor Woods scored on a 7-yard run, Boykin returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown, and after Julian Cuthbertson recovered a Patriot fumble, Sabo threw 28 yards to Kyran Bowman for a 40-0 Ram lead at halftime.

“We came out with a lot of energy,” Boykin said. “The line did what they had to do. The receivers did what they had to do. Travis came out hot, and Coach Bryant was calling the right calls. We just had a good overall team win.”
