Poor weather over the weekend prompted the annual Carteret Community College Foundation Spanish Mackerel and Dolphin Fishing Tournament to be postponed. The tournament has been rescheduled for July 27.
Organizers made the decision after the National Weather Service called for small craft advisories for winds of 20 to 25 mph.
"Because this is a family fishing tournament, we believe the responsible and safest thing to do is to reschedule to Saturday, July 27," David Nateman, executive director of the foundation, said in a statement. "Besides the date changing, all details remain the same."
The annual event is designed for families and fishermen with smaller boats who like to fish closer to shore, from the shore, or from a dock, with categories for Spanish mackerel, bluefish, flounder, king mackerel and dolphin.
Divisions include kids, teens, juniors, women and seniors.
"Safety is our utmost priority," Ken Eiler, tournament chairman and foundation board member, said in a statement. "Early summer is a great time for fishing around Beaufort Inlet with the big schools of bluefish and Spanish mackerel swimming close to shore, but when we have strong south winds, it can make fishing near shore very difficult and unpleasant."
Those who had not registered for the tournament can register for the rescheduled event on July 27. The tournament is scheduled for The Boathouse at Front Street Village in Beaufort.
The event features a captain’s social from 5 to 8 p.m. July 26 at The Boathouse, which includes heavy hors d’oeuvres, refreshments, a silent auction and raffle.
The fishing starts at 6 a.m. July 27. Weigh-ins are from 1 to 3 p.m., with an awards party at 3:30 p.m.
Last year, 75 boats participated in the event, with $4,500 in prizes and awards being handed out.
The tournament raises money for the Carteret Community College Foundation, with provides financial support and resources for the the college’s students and programs.
