Winning back-to-back state championships brings with it high expectations for a third straight title for the Havelock High football team in 2013.
At least according to preseason publicity.
The state prep magazine Friday Night Football has put the favorite label on the Rams in its preseason publication that came out last week.
It lists Havelock as the No. 5 overall team in the state, the No. 1 3A team and the favorite to repeat as 3A champions.
"Jim Bob Bryant has created this Havelock juggernaut, and it will not be stopped in 2013, or quite possibly 2014 either," according to the magazine.
The magazine also lists Havelock as the top team in the coastal region.
Still, the Rams will have some questions entering the season, such as how to replace four players who signed to play at Division I colleges, including standout quarterback Pharoh Cooper.
The Rams also have to replenish their offensive and defensive lines.
Still, the magazine mentions that the Rams junior varsity has gone 20-0 the past two seasons and has the services of running back Derrell Scott.
Scott, who ran for 1,709 yards and 34 touchdowns a year ago, made the magazine’s preseason all-state team and is No. 3 in the magazine’s top 100 seniors. He is profiled in the magazine, which has a small picture of him on the cover.
Also listed as a top 100 senior is Taylor Woods, who comes in at No. 88 after a season in which he rushed for 757 yards and 10 touchdowns while recording 34 tackles and recovering a fumble on defense.
Also receiving individual accolades is wide receiver Michael Bowman, who the magazine lists as one of the top 35 juniors in the state.
Havelock is scheduled to start official practice on Aug. 1. The Rams open the season at Washington on Aug. 23.
