Some of the key plays from Havelock’s 21-13 victory over Concord in Saturday’s state 3A championship game.

-- Concord drove the ball to the Havelock 9-yard line on its first possession, but on third down, Havelock’s Keion Joyner knocked down a pass attempt by Concord’s Keenan Black, forcing fourth down and holding the Spiders to Alex Maganda’s 27-yard field goal.

-- Havelock faced a third-and-1 at the Concord 40-yard line when Michael Howard and Travis Sabo failed to connect on the center-quarterback exchange, with Logan Sedergren recovering the resulting fumble. Two plays later, Rocky Reid ran 55 yards for a touchdown, putting Concord ahead 10-0 early in the second quarter. However, three plays later, Derrell Scott answered with a 51-yard touchdown run, giving the Rams new life in the contest.

-- Midway through the second quarter, Concord drove to the Havelock 31-yard line and faced a fourth-and-8. Black tried to hit tight end Drew Yoos over the middle, but safety Taylor Woods broke up the pass, giving the ball back to the Rams.

-- With 1:53 left in the first half, Concord faced third-and-6 from its own 13. The Spiders turned to Reid, but Havelock’s Anthony Fisher and Andrew Ramirez combined to tackle the Reid a yard short of the first down. Concord punted the ball back to the Rams, who scored on fourth-and-6 when Scott took a draw play 20 yards for a score and a 14-10 Ram lead at halftime.

-- Concord open the third quarter by driving to the Ram 8-yard line and faced fourth-and-6, but Black’s pass into the end zone fell incomplete. Two plays later, Scott went 96 yards for a touchdown, giving Havelock a 21-10 lead with 6:55 left in the third quarter.

-- Concord drove to the Havelock 5-yard line with just over a minute left in the third, but Keion Joyner and Andrew Ramirez combined to sack Black, forcing a fumble that Ramirez recovered. Though a penalty negated the touchdown return by Ramirez, the Rams kept the ball and put a stop to Concord’s drive.
