The Havelock High wrestling team won three of its nine matches during the Bighorn Duals Friday and Saturday at Havelock High.
Ten teams participated in the tournament, including powerhouse Jack Britt, as well as New Bern, West Carteret and Croatan, among other area schools.
“It’s a big draw where every kid could potentially wrestle nine matches,” Havelock wrestling coach Pat Whitford said of the event. “In these types of tournaments, the kids are going to get matches. That attracts the tougher competition.”
Havelock earned victories over Swansboro (36-33), White Oak (62-18) and Southwest Onslow (44-30) during the tournament. Among the losses was a 55-16 setback to New Bern.
Junior Ryan Davis notched a perfect 9-0 mark at 132 and 138 pounds during the tournament, while junior John Ellis went 7-0 at 152 and 160 pounds.
“Those are the guys we look at to score points for us every match,” Whitford said. “They are going to go deep in individual tournaments. They set the pace in the practice room as captains.”
Rams’ freshmen Jacob Barber (113) and Chandler Day (106) won half of their matches.
“We are still making freshmen mistakes, but we are starting to wrestle better and turn it around,” Whitford said. “We are starting to see a lot more positives than negatives.”
Havelockis scheduled to return to the mat against Washington Tuesday at Havelock High.
