Havelock wrestlers keep hopes for conference title alive

“Everybody gave us a full six minutes,” Andrews said. “Nobody quit. Nobody gave up. We didn’t give up pins and we didn’t give up tech falls, which was huge considering how close the score was.”

The Eagles trailed 27-9 but stormed back in the lower weights, getting a forfeit victory from Tyler Bird (106) and decision victories from Darrin Mewborn (113), Gabe Pierre (120), Daniel Adams (126) and Dillon Maravelous (132) to pull ahead before the final two matches.

“We gave up pins when we shouldn’t have and we didn’t score bonus points when we had the opportunity,” West Craven coach John Honbarrier said. “That’s what wrestling’s about. You can’t give up points and you’ve got to score points. We lost a close one. I feel like we could have wrestled better.”

With the victory, Havelock improves to 3-1 in the conference, a half-game behind leading West Carteret and tied with Swansboro.

The Rams are scheduled to host New Bern in a non-conference match at 6:30 p.m. Friday and participate in the Winter Duals at West Carteret Saturday before hosting White Oak at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
