The Havelock Ram wrestling team used strength and speed to jump out to a commanding lead and went on to beat West Craven 42-28 Wednesday in a Coastal 3A Conference match at Havelock High.

The match started at the 138-pound weight class, where West Craven’s Robert Baker earned a hard-fought 9-4 win over Havelock’s Ramone Lawson.

The Eagles didn’t get another win until Gabe Pierre scored a major decision over Chandler Day at 106.

Havelock’s Hunter Littrell (145), Timothy Martin (heavyweight), and Ryan Davis (132) all had victories by pin.

Eagle pins came from Darrin Mewborn (113) and Zaire Layne (120).

“We knew it would probably come down to the last few matches and it did,” West Craven coach Thomas Durham said. “Our guys are just going to have to stop being afraid of the guys in the black singlets. We had some guys not wrestle up to their potential tonight.”

The Rams were leading 36-25 after Layne’s pin at 120 and going into a match at 126 between West Craven’s Dillon Maravelas and Zacharia Drysdale.
