Lindsay Mendel is ready and excited to take on the challenge of turning around the Havelock volleyball program.
With an upbeat tone and beaming smile, she raved about her girls' attitudes and progression already in the preseason.
"They are great girls and they have all had great attitudes and are working really hard," Mendel said.
"We just have to get out of a rut that we've been in. The main goal is just to start winning some games because the girls are tired of losing."
Havelock was 1-14 a season ago and 1-10 in 2012.
Led by returners Sha'Nice Frazier and Brice Goudy, Mendel hopes her team is ready to start moving forward.
Mendel is a math teacher at Havelock and for now is sticking to a rather simple formula for volleyball.
"We just want to improve upon the team chemistry and like I said, make that turn into winning," she said.
The Rams got in some court time and early preseason action Saturday at the New Bern Volleyball Jamboree.
In timed matches, they took on New Bern, East Carteret and Croatan.
"It was good to just get some work in and competition for both our varsity and JV girls before the season starts." Mendel said.
The season begins for Havelock with a trip to Pamlico County on Aug. 20.
While Frazier and Goudy are leading returners for the Rams, Mendel hopes to see some of the girls step up that are playing varsity this season as opposed to JV a year ago.
Havelock's Coastal Conference play begins Sept. 9 at Richlands.
