The Havelock High track team had three individuals and one relay team quality for the state 3A track and field championships after placing in the top four in last week’s regional meet.
Tempestt Frazier won the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 2 inches during the 3A regional meet held Saturday at West Carteret High School in Morehead City. She was the only Havelock athlete to win a regional title.
Frazier was also part of the 400-meter relay team that placed fourth in a time of 53.18 seconds to qualify for the state meet. Teaming with Frazier on the team were Dominique Martinez, Shanice Frazier and Kaylee Larson.
Zach Bruns finished third in the 800 run for the Rams in a time of 2:06.25, while Iesha Godette was fourth in the discus with a throw of 100 feet, 2 inches.
The state 3A track and field championship is scheduled for Saturday at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro.
Along with the top four finishers, Havelock also placed fifth in four events, just missing out on qualifying for the state meet.
The girls 800 relay team of Martinez, Tempestt Frazier, Shanice Frazier and Larson placed fifth in a time of 1:52.75, just behind C.B. Aycock, which posted a time of 1:52.41.
Also for the girls team, Serenity Nolan was fifth in the discus with a throw of 98 feet, 11 inches.
The boys 400 relay team of A.J. Coplon, Derrell Scott, Taylor Woods and Matthew Boykin placed fifth in a time of 45.61, just behind Jacksonville’s 45.27.
Boykin was also fifth in the 100 dash, finishing in 11.39, just behind South Central’s Deonte Howard (11.08).
In other events, Godette placed ninth in the shot put with a throw of 30 feet, 6 inches, while Scott ran 11.61 in the 100 and failed to advance out of the preliminary round.
