Havelock sweeps New Bern in basketball

Havelock’s sharp-shooting duo of Zack Bruns and Michael Bowman combined for 32 points as the Rams beat New Bern 67-62 Monday in New Bern.

In a game that saw the Bears jumped out to 15-8 lead after one quarter and a 31-24 at the half, the Rams rushed back to outscore New Bern (1-1) 43-31 over the final two quarters for the win.

“If you can’t get up for Havelock-New Bern, then you don’t have a pulse,” Havelock coach Bill Fryczynski said. “A lot of people are still hyped up from football and I’m very happy to have my football guys back as I’m sure they (New Bern) are as well.”

Havelock (1-2) played the game without starting point guard Kyran Bowman (back injury), and Pharoh Cooper is waiting to begin the basketball season until after the Shrine Bowl game Dec. 15.

“We didn’t have Kyran tonight but we have a team full of guards and I knew I had guys like Zack, Michael and David (Carter) who could handle the ball,” Fryczynski said.

The two teams were battling tooth-and-nail over the final minutes and Havelock forced three straight New Bern turnovers that all led to points.

“We played well tonight at times but those three straight turnovers killed us,” New Bern coach Cliff Dillard said. “I probably shouldn’t have waited so long to call a timeout and gotten it earlier. The boys played well defensively and this loss is on me.”
