Havelock senior defensive lineman Billy Watkins missed a couple of days of practice in preparation for the 2014 season.

“He had to go with his church to Florida for a singing and dancing church thing,” Havelock coach Jim Bob Bryant said. “We let him go for that. We told him he’s going to have to demonstrate that for the team one day.”

Watkins would have no problem with that.

“He’s a really good Christian kid. He’s very grounded in his faith,” Bryant said of Watkins. “He always leads our team prayer. The coaching staff doesn’t lead it. Billy is the guy who always leads it.”

The quiet Watkins, who has the nickname “The Reverend,” doesn’t shy away from his faith.

“We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us,” he said.

Bryant said Watkins is one of those student-athletes who gives him no problems.
