Havelock’s Pharoh Cooper and A.J. Coplon were named to the NCPreps.com all-state team on Thursday.
Cooper was selected as an overall athlete, while Coplon was selected as a defensive back. Cooper has committed to play at South Carolina next season, while Coplon has committed to East Carolina.
Coplon racked up 270 return yards on 12 punt returns with four touchdowns, and had six interceptions with two returned for touchdowns. He also returned a fumble for a touchdown in Havelock’s state championship victory over Concord.
“It feels really good to be on there with these guys. It was a bit of a shock” Coplon said. “It showed me that all of my hard work in the spring and summer paid off, and I think having three of us from Craven County is great.”
New Bern’s Bra’lon Cherry also made the team, which is done regardless of school size classification.
Cooper, who played wide receiver as a junior, became a quarterback his senior season.
“I just wanted to go out there this year and do what I could to help my team win a state championship, which we did,” said Cooper, named most valuable player of the state championship game. “I wanted to do better this year than the year before.”
Cooper threw for 2,895 yards and 25 touchdowns and also rushed for 1,267 yards and another 15 scores. He also returned a pair of punts for touchdowns and ran back an interception 87 yards in the state title game.
“It’s a great honor to be recognized as one of the best players in the state and I have to give all of the glory to God,” Cooper said. “It doesn’t matter to me what position they picked me for either, it’s just great to be on the team. With three of us on there, it speaks a lot to the talent in Craven County and we are putting it on the map.”
