The Havelock boys basketball team advanced to the championship game of the Coastal 3A Conference tournament with a 60-52 victory over South Central in the semifinals played Wednesday at Havelock High.
The second-seeded Rams (16-8) managed just three points in the first quarter and trailed 12-3, but exploded for 25 points in the second quarter. Havelock trailed 30-28 at halftime.
The Rams continued to push in the third quarter and took the lead 47-42 entering the fourth quarter.
Havelock takes on West Craven in the championship game at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at West Craven. Havelock has lost two previous meetings against the Eagles, falling 89-76 on Jan. 18 in Vanceboro and 75-68 in the regular-season finale on Valentine's Day at Havelock High.
The Havelock girls lost in their semifinal game 56-26 to top-seeded D.H. Conley Wednesday in Greenville. The Rams held a 7-4 lead after the first quarter, but struggled offensively the entire night. The Vikings took a 21-14 lead at halftime and then used a 17-4 run in the third quarter to put the Rams away.
The Havelock girls, who are 12-13 and finished fourth in the conference, did make the playoffs and will face a road game next week. The opponent and time of the game is expected to be announced this weekend.
