With its football players back on the court after the state championship game, the Havelock High boys basketball team picked up its first victory of the season with a 59-58 defeat of White Oak in a Coastal 3A Conference game Tuesday night at Havelock High.
Jordan Cuthbertson, a defensive back on the football team, hit one of two free throws with 3.7 seconds left, and White Oak missed a last-second shot, giving the Rams the margin of victory.
Kyran Bowman, a wide receiver on the football team, had 20 points, six assists and six rebounds to lead the Rams. Micheal Bowman totaled 15 points, while Keion Joyner contributed 12 points and eight rebounds. Cuthbertson added eight points.
The Rams trailed by 10 points at one point in the contest but rallied in the second half to get the victory.
Havelock had been 0-5 on the season, as the entire starting lineup was in the middle of playing for the football team’s bid for a state championship. The game was the first in the conference for the Rams.
Meanwhile, the Havelock girls improved to 3-3 on the season with a 71-36 victory over the Vikings.
Jalisa Wilson scored 20 points for the Rams, while Natalie Johnson had 12, Apriel Barrette and Shernecia Martin 11 each and Dominique Martinez 10.
The Rams are next scheduled to host Richlands Thursday and then Eastern Wayne on Friday.
