“I tell them to practice their plays that we practice, the new plays,” Bennett said. “I tell them these (non-conference) games don’t really matter, so it’s their time to try new things.”

Stewart, New Bern’s senior setter, distributed seven assists to go along with eight kills.

“She is one of our captains,” Bennett said. “She is a great communicator and really great at controlling a play, which is important for a setter. I trust her to make calls.”

Mitchell led New Bern with 25 service points. Caitlin Solter had six kills, Melton had four and Sydney Gilgo and Jordan each had three.

Everyone on New Bern’s varsity roster got in the match.

“The way I do rotations, especially for varsity, everyone gets to play in the first three (sets),” Bennett said. “If we are having to go into fourth or fifth sets, that’s where the rotation gets picked more.

“Everyone gets to play right off the bat.”
