Havelock makes statement in victory over Cardinals

Havelock won its 21st consecutive game, a school record.

“Last week, I felt like we got pushed around and some people were doubting how good we were,” Havelock coach Jim Bob Bryant said. “This past Saturday, we hit the sleds at 7:45 a.m., and I told the kids I wanted to win every game from here on out by at least 28 points. Scoring 42 tonight against a very good Jacksonville team was a statement for us.”

Havelock led 14-0 at the half Scott touchdown runs of 26 and 4 yards, one of which was set up by a Keion Joyner interception.

In the third quarter, the Rams outscored the Cardinals 28-0, and the offense didn’t take the field until the 7:35 mark.

Joyner returned a fumble 67 yards for a touchdown on Jacksonville’s opening series of the second half.

“After I scooped up the ball, I kept looking back to see how close they were to catching me,” said Joyner, who also had a sack in the contest. “I think we came together tonight and everyone did their job.”

After that, Akenno Godette partially blocked a punt, and the ball hit Ram teammates Julian Cuthbertson in the back. Cuthbertson alertly picked up the ball and ran it back 49 yards for a touchdown.
