Havelock Junior Legion seeks donations for state tourney

The Havelock Junior Legion team placed second in its district tournament and has qualified for the state tournament this weekend in Raleigh.

As such, the team is seeking donations from area businesses and residents to help fund the trip, which involves at least two nights in a hotel for the members of the team and coaches. Any amount of donation will be accepted. Checks can be made payable to Havelock Junior Legion.

During the district tournament, Havelock picked up victories over West Craven and Hampstead in the first two rounds. After a 5-3 loss to Swansboro, Havelock needed to beat East Carteret on Sunday to clinch a spot in the district championship game and the state tournament. After falling behind 4-1 in the fourth, Havelock rallied to win the contest 7-4 to qualify for the state tournament.

In Sunday night’s championship game, Havelock lost to Swansboro 3-2 in eight innings.

Havelock is scheduled to open play in the double-elimination state tournament at 9 a.m. Friday at Athens-Drive High School in Raleigh.

Members of the team include Junior Renwick, Luke Magyar, Ryan Lewis, Scott Wood, Drew Simcox, Austin Jefferies, Ryan Helms, Alex Verduzco, Jesse Campbell, Tyson Dickson, Zechariah Felton, Zack Muse, Zach Sabdo, Tanner Johnson, Jack Forehand and Cameron Carpenter.
