VANCEBORO – The Havelock Rams seemed well on their way to a big victory, leading by 16 points midway through the third quarter at West Craven Tuesday night in Vanceboro.

The Eagles made a furious comeback, cutting the deficit to two points, before falling 59-51 to the Coastal 3A Conference leading Rams.

Havelock (9-5, 6-0) forced 22 Eagle turnovers and got scoring boosts from Jordan Cuthbertson (11 points) and Jordan Begley (10 points).

The Eagles received their jolt of adrenaline from Zac Cuthbertson (22 points and 12 rebounds) and Noah Lewis, who came off the bench to hit a trio of 3-pointers in the third quarter and finished with 12 points.

Matt Boykin made key drives and buckets down the stretch aand Shondel Granison came up with big rebounds.

“We have got to be able to hold a 16-point lead,” Havelock coach Bill Fryczynski said. “It was ugly, but in the end our toughness won an ugly game for us. Boykin, Granison and Kyran (Bowman) really sparked us there at the end.”

West Craven (5-10, 3-3) outrebounded the Rams 31-25, but the 22 giveaways and 3-for-14 free-throw shooting didn’t allow the Eagles to capitalize on Havelock mistakes. The Rams overcame 14 turnovers and poor shooting. Bowman, who had been averaging nearly 21 points per game, was held to 10.
