The quick-strike offense and lockdown defense that is the core of the Havelock football program was on full display Friday in a 44-20 blowout victory over Eastern Wayne.
The Rams raced out to a 34-0 halftime lead and a 44-0 margin after three quarters of play in winning their third straight eastern regional championship. Havelock advances to play Concord in the state championship at 11 a.m. Dec. 14 at Raleigh’s Carter-Finley Stadium.
Havelock coach Jim Bob Bryant pulled his starters on offense and defense at the beginning of the fourth quarter, which is when the Warriors scored all 20 of their points.
The Rams scored on drives of 24 seconds and 15 seconds in the second quarter and forced three Eastern Wayne turnovers.
“I just feel like our program and where it is right now is one of the best in the state of North Carolina,” Bryant said. “The varsity team has only lost one game in three years and hopefully we can still say that after next Saturday.”
The victory was Havelock’s 29th consecutive win and 14th postseason win in a row.
On a night with a lot of focus on senior stars such as running backs Derrell Scott and Taylor Woods, linebacker Andrew Ramirez and others - a junior stole the show.
Quarterback Travis Sabdo was 15-for-18 passing with 260 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. He now has 36 touchdown passes and just five interceptions on the season.
“I’m proud of Travis (Sabdo). He has never lost a game in high school football – undefeated as a JV player and now undefeated as a varsity player,” Bryant said.
Sabdo, who took over at quarterback for the varsity at the start of the season, was all smiles after the victory.
“I made some key reads and was sure to get the ball out early on quick throws, but most of the credit has to go to our coaching staff,” he said. “They prepare us so well for blitzes and for schemes our opponents play, that we are ready for anything.”
Bryant saw his senior class of Scott, Woods, Ramirez, Maurice Harris, B.J. Boyd, Michael Howard, Jordan and Julian Cuthbertson and all the rest improve to 57-5 over their careers.
“This senior class does not know what it is like not to play in an Eastern Final and for them to have their senior night at the Eastern Final is a perfect finish for them,” Bryant said.
Next week’s game for the state championship against Concord (15-0) is a rematch. The Rams won 55-21 last season in Winston-Salem after trailing 21-20 at halftime.
“It feels great (to get back to the state title game) and it’s what we have worked for every year since I’ve been here,” Scott said. “It’s a blessing and a privilege to play football at Havelock because not everybody that plays high school football gets to.”
