The Havelock girls team scored the first nine points of the contest and were never seriously threatened in picking up their first victory of the season, beating East Carteret 57-32 Tuesday at Havelock High.
The Rams got baskets from Kierra Fleming, Natalie Johnson, Apriel Barrette and Jalisa Wilson in going on top 9-0. The Mariners didn’t get their first points until the 3:54 mark of the first quarter.
Wilson then scored five points in a Havelock 11-0 run midway through the second quarter to help the Rams to a 33-15 lead at halftime.
The Mariners trailed by as much as 23 points in the third quarter, but got a 3-pointer at the buzzer from Caroline Yeomans to get within 45-32 entering the final period but would get no closer.
Wilson led the Rams with 14 points, while Fleming and Barrette added 10 each.
