The Havelock High girls basketball team lost 48-43 to Union Pines in the second round of the state 3A playoffs on Wednesday night in Cameron.

Fourth-seeded Union Pines improved to 23-4, while the 13th-seeded Rams ended the year with a 15-10 mark.

Havelock trailed 15-11 after the first qurater, but then used a 16-7 scoring run to take a 27-22 lead at halftime.

However, the third quarter did in the Rams, who managed to score just three points during the eight-minute stretch. Union Pines pulled out to a 33-30 lead heading into the fourth quarter and extended the margin to 47-36 before the Rams closed the gap in the final minutes.

Nyona Shields had 15 points to lead Union Pines, while Tiffany Hicks added eight points and 11 rebounds.

Natalie Johnson had 19 points to lead Havelock, while Jalisa Wilson added eight.

The Rams finished second in the Coastal 3A Conference regular season but lost to Swansboro last week in the semifinals of the conference tournament. Havelock bounced back with a convincing 69-39 victory over Fayetteville Westover in Monday's opening round of the playoffs.
