In a battle of league unbeatens Tuesday night, the West Craven girls came away with a 68-48 victory over Havelock for sole possession of first place in the Coastal 3A Conference.
West Craven (15-1, 6-0) got 40 points from Jamie Cherry and a huge lift from Attalia Dixon who totaled 15 points and 10 rebounds.
“I like these games that are like two prize-fighters just throwing blows at each other,” West Craven coach David Fernandez said. “Attalia stepped up huge. Every day we tell them it could be them and Tay was the one tonight.”
The Rams were within 27-21 at the half, but saw the deficit balloon to 13 after three periods. Apriel Barrette led the Rams with 19 points and Jalisa Wilson chipped in 10.
Cherry played the majority of the fourth quarter with four fouls, yet still drained a couple 3-pointers and slashed to the rim for free-throw opportunities.
“Initially I thought Jamie got really frustrated tonight with the fouls, but she sat for a couple minutes, calmed down and calmed the team down and was able to play that whole fourth quarter with the four fouls,” Fernandez said.
The loss was Havelock’s first in conference and dropped the Rams to 8-7 overall and 5-1 in league play.
Havelock is next scheduled to play at Richlands on Friday.
