The Havelock High softball team picked a good time to get its first victory of the season.
The Rams scored five runs in the first inning, beating White Oak 7-3 in the Coastal 3A Conference opener for both teams Friday at Havelock High.
“We got that monkey off our back,” Havelock coach Anna Spear said.
Laneisha Nolan started the Havelock first inning with a walk, stole second and scored on Alyssa Crowe’s single to left. Brianna Bushman and Taylor Forehand followed with singles, loading the bases. One run scored on an error, and then Megan Brogdan laced a single just inside the third base line, scoring two more runs. The fifth run came home on Alexis Washenko’s groundout.
“We did a lot of work with our sticks in the past week, and we showed improvement,” Spear said. “We still had some letdowns. We have got to have an urgency to dominate. We have to be a team that wants to dominate.”
White Oak (2-5, 0-1) got a run back in the third when Houston Etscheidt singled and scored on Olivia Fonville’s single, cutting the gap to 5-1.
The Rams (1-3, 1-0) answered in their half of the third when Kennedy Campbell reached second on an error and scored on Brogdan’s single for a 6-1 advantage.
The Vikings got back in the game in the fifth when Brooke Humphrey and Taylor Blackmon led off with walks. Humphrey later scored on a wild pitch, and Blackmon came home on Etscheidt’s groundout for a 6-3 contest.
“Overall, I thought we played very well,” White Oak coach Sarah Novelli said. “We definitely improved in the number of errors we had in the last few games.
“I wish we would have played more games, but everyone is in the same boat. We have a ways to go. I think we have a couple of more weeks to get to where we should be for this time of year.”
The Rams added a run in the sixth when Ashlyn Gosnell singled and scored on Nolan’s triple to left.
Havelock totaled nine hits, with Brogdan going 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Nolan going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Bushman was 2-for-4, and Crowe, Forehand, and Gosnell also collected hits. Nolan, Crowe, Bushman and Forehand - the top four hitters in Havelock’s lineup – went 6-for-13 in the contest.
Forehand got the victory on the mound for the Rams, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out eight over seven innings.
The Vikings got hits from Corrinne Domhoff, Shelby Lyons, Etscheidt and Fonville. Humphrey took the loss on the mound, settling down after the first inning and striking out four in the contest.
The Rams are next scheduled to play at Richlands Monday, while White Oak is scheduled to play at Richlands Tuesday.
