Havelock boys to host playoff game Monday night

Havelock coach Bill Fryczynski isn’t a fan of the playoff seeding process, especially when it pits his Rams against a conference opponent they’ve played three times prior.

The Rams (16-9) host Coastal 3A Conference foe South Central at 7 p.m. on Monday. The winner will play either No. 2 seed Triton (22-5) or Northern Nash (8-13) on Wednesday.

“I don’t like the fact that we have to play them for a fourth time, and I’m sure (South Central coach) Chris Cherry feels the same way,” Fryczynski. “The seeding process has too many flaws. It just doesn’t make sense.”

Havelock is the sixth seed in the East, and the second best team in the conference. Fryczynski is aware that Wednesday’s conference tournament semifinal win over South Central was huge and secured a home game.

If the Rams had lost, they would likely be playing at South Central. Instead, Havelock earned a 60-52 win over South Central.

“Obviously I’d rather play at home,” Fryczynski said. “We should be playing somebody else. That home win last week was very important for us and gave us another home game.”

Havelock split with South Central during the regular season. It beat the Falcons, 62-59, on Feb. 5 and lost in Winterville, 79-55, on Jan. 8.
