A night after clinching the regular-season Coastal 3A Conference championship, the Havelock High boys basketball team lost for the first time since December, falling 60-48 to West Carteret Friday in Morehead City.
Despite the loss, the Rams (14-6, 11-1) will be the No. 1 seed for next week’s conference tournament and will host a semifinal game on Wednesday.
The Rams led 14-11 after the first quarter, but the Patriots exploded for 29 points in the second quarter, taking a 40-28 lead at halftime. Havelock was unable to find its offense in the final two quarters.
Kyran Bowman scored 28 points to lead Havelock.

Natalie Johnson made a free throw with no time remaining to lift Havelock to a 50-49 win over West Carteret.
The victory locked up the second seed in next week’s conference tournament for the Rams (13-8, 9-3). Havelock is scheduled to host White Oak at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the tournament’s first round.
The contest was tight throughout. Havelock led 14-8 early, but the Patriots rallied to within 21-19 at halftime and tied it at 32 entering the final frame.
