The Havelock High boys basketball team had momentum entering the Sports Center/Carolina Sports Holiday Classic, but two losses later, the Rams must regroup as they head into the heart of the Coastal 3A Conference schedule.
Havelock fell 77-68 to West Carteret in the third-place game of the tournament on Friday at West Carteret. Havelock lost 99-96 to Croatan in the first round.
With the losses, Havelock falls to 5-5 on the year and plays at Washington in a league contest on Friday night. The Rams have victories over White Oak and D.H. Conley and hold a 2-0 mark in league play.
In the non-conference matchup against West Carteret, the Rams led 20-16 after the first quarter, but the Patriots surged in the second quarter to lead 40-37 at halftime. Havelock struggled in the third quarter with just 12 points, as West Carteret extended its lead to 59-49, and the Rams couldn’t mount a challenge in the final stanza.
Michael Bowman led Havelock with 23 points, while Zack Bruns added 20 and Matt Prichard contributed 12.
Eli Blake led West Carteret (4-7) with 27 points.
Havelock entered its first-round game against Croatan on a four-game winning streak, but lost in a shootout, 99-96.
In a game that was tight throughout, Croatan held off the Rams late at the free-throw line to get the victory. Bruns’ last-second 3-pointer accounted for the final margin.
JacQues Chambers hit seven 3-pointers and totaled 47 points for the Cougars. Austin Saunders added 23 points.
Croatan (10-0) went on to beat East Carteret 70-60 to win the tournament championship.
Against Croatan, Bowman had 27 points to lead Havelock, while Prichard had 23 and Bruns 21.
