Havelock baseball team downs Pamlico

The Havelock Rams had just scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to gain a 4-0 advantage on Pamlico Thursday night.

In the Hurricanes’ half of the fourth, Jacob Willis led off with a solo home run to left-center, followed by a Trent Prescott single that sparked a Pamlico rally.

That rally turned out to be short-lived, as Rams centerfielder Pharoh Cooper charged, dived and made a tremendous catch to rob Bradley Bennett of a base hit.

Cooper then popped to his feet and threw to first for a double play. Havelock tacked on two more runs, while the Hurricanes could manage only one, in a 6-2 Rams win at Pamlico High School.

“Pharoh (Cooper) is a pleasure to coach and more people need to come out and see this young man play baseball, because he is a great player and a joy to coach,” Havelock coach Charlie Smith said. “He got everything going for us tonight. We were striking out a lot early, then he gets a base hit and everybody starts hitting, not to mention the great catch.”

Cooper also went 2-for-4 with a run scored, two stolen bases and an RBI.

Cameron Carpenter got the win on the mound for Havelock (6-4), tossing five innings, while allowing one run on six hits and striking out four.
